The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) underscores the vital role of officiating in the sport, emphasizing its critical importance in ensuring athlete safety, upholding fairness, and maintaining the integrity of muaythai. As the sole IOC-recognized governing body for the sport, IFMA remains dedicated to fostering the highest standards of officiating, embodying the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and equality.
In Hong Kong, China, 30 officials gathered for a regional technical workshop led by IFMA’s esteemed Technical Commission. The seminar brought together global experts, including Ajarn Thanong, one of the world’s leading muaythai officials; Abby Nelson, an International Technical Official (ITO) from Australia; and Diong, an ITO from Malaysia. The event also showcased IFMA’s commitment to gender equality by highlighting the diverse leadership roles held by women in muaythai officiating.
Over three days, participants engaged in comprehensive training on rules and regulations while exploring the significance of maintaining high officiating standards at all levels—from grassroots to professional. The workshop ensured that all officials were well-versed in the latest rule updates and equipped to deliver fair and consistent adjudication in line with the Olympic spirit.
Dr. Erdogan, Chair of the IFMA Medical Commission, alongside IFMA Sport Director and ITA Ambassador Janice Lyn, delivered sessions addressing essential topics, such as the role of technical officials in weight management, injury prevention, and the pivotal contributions of the IFMA Intelligence Unit to targeted anti-doping efforts. These discussions reinforced the importance of safeguarding athlete health and promoting clean sport, key pillars of the Olympic Movement.
Stephan Fox, IFMA General Secretary and Executive Board Member of SportAccord, emphasized the federation’s responsibilities as an IOC-recognized organization. He highlighted the indispensable role of technical officials in ensuring that muaythai not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the global Olympic community. By upholding integrity, fairness, and professionalism, these officials form the backbone of the sport’s continued inclusion in the Olympic family.
The Hong Kong seminar reaffirmed IFMA’s commitment to empowering its officials with knowledge and skills, ensuring the sport of muaythai thrives on the principles of excellence, respect, and equality—core values of the Olympic Charter. This workshop serves as a testament to IFMA’s dedication to its athletes and its unwavering mission to promote muaythai as a sport built on integrity, safety, and inclusivity.
