
The 2025 African Muaythai Championships launched in spectacular fashion in Tripoli, Libya, transforming the capital into the heart of African Muaythai. Athletes from across the continent arrived full of pride and determination, and the event opened with a powerful celebration of tradition, unity, and sporting excellence.
Opening Ceremony – A Night of Culture and Honour
The opening ceremony was a vibrant display of Libya’s cultural heritage and the values of Muaythai. Dancers, drummers, and national delegations filled the venue with colour and energy as the championships were officially declared open.
A special moment came courtesy of the visiting Pi Muay band from Thailand, who performed the Rot Nam Dam Hua ceremony – a traditional water-pouring ritual to pay respect to elders and wish blessings for the Thai New Year, Songkran. VIP guests and dignitaries took part in this deeply meaningful exchange, symbolising humility, respect, and cultural harmony.
Day 1: The Battles Begin
With the ceremonial drums still echoing, the first day of competition delivered intense matchups that thrilled the crowd and set the tone for a high-calibre tournament.

Benyaya Jugurta (ALG) vs Hamza Rachid (MAR)
Egypt’s Mostafa Hossam edged out a hard-fought 29–28 victory in a tightly contested battle, showcasing excellent clinch work and ring control.
🔹 Women’s U23 67kg
Ichrak Sayadi (TUN) vs Rania Elramaly (EGY)
Rania Elramaly from Egypt impressed with sharp technique and powerful teeps, earning a unanimous decision win 30–27 over Tunisia’s Sayadi.
🔹 Men’s U23 71kg
Muayid Altikbali (LBA) vs Reda Hosny (EGY)
In one of the day’s standout performances, Libya’s Muayid Altikbali delivered a dominant display to win 30–27, advancing confidently to the next round.
As the African Championships continue, the standard of competition promises to rise even further. With passionate athletes, rich cultural exchanges, and a unifying spirit in the air, Tripoli is truly living up to its role as host of one of the most important events in the African Muaythai calendar.
