With music, fireworks, and a spirit of global unity, the city of Chengdu warmly welcomed the world to the 12th edition of The World Games. Against the glowing waters of Qinhuang Lake, athletes from across the globe gathered for a vibrant Opening Ceremony filled with energy, tradition, and a message of peace.

In a spectacular first, the World Games cauldron was lit on water. Cheered on by thousands, waterski stars Xu Lu and Alu Xiaobo glided across the lake, torches in hand, before igniting the flame atop a dancing fountain. The mix of fire and water created a powerful symbol — harmony through contrast — setting the tone for 10 unforgettable days ahead.
“When fire and water come together, we’re reminded that unity is always possible,” said Hu Xiao, the ceremony’s artistic director. “That’s what these Games are about.”
Celebrating Athletes and the Joy of Sport
The Games were officially declared open by State Councilor Shen Yiqin, while IOC President Kirsty Coventry sent a video message encouraging athletes to seize every moment:
“In your dedication and pursuit of excellence, don’t forget — sport is about joy. Enjoy the moment, give it your best, and make this a Games to remember.”

IWGA President José Perurena Lopez praised Chengdu for its outstanding hospitality and vision:
“Chengdu is not just the host of these Games — it is the soul. Thank you for embracing the world with such open arms.”
Athletes’ Parade: A Colourful, Joyful Procession

Cheers erupted as over 6,600 athletes and officials from 115 countries and regions paraded across the lakeside stage. Flags waved, smiles lit up the night, and spontaneous dancing filled the air. There were no costumes, but there was no shortage of celebration.

One of the most heartfelt moments came as the Muaythai delegation entered the stage, greeted by warm applause. Representing a sport rich in tradition and discipline, Muaythai continues to shine as a proud and growing part of The World Games family.
Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan, President of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA), shared:
“It fills me with pride to see our athletes walk side by side with the world. Muaythai is more than a sport — it is respect, culture, and heart. The World Games gives us a global stage to share those values, and we are deeply honored to be here.”

A Festival of Culture and Friendship
After the parade, the night unfolded with music, dance, and fireworks. The skies lit up with a fiery “W” for World, while the “Tree of Friendship” — inspired by ancient artifacts and Chengdu’s iconic dove tree — bloomed in brilliant lights overhead, symbolizing peace and global kinship.

Choruses of young voices from around the world, including China, the U.S., Italy, and more, joined together to perform the Games’ theme song Countless Wonders. Their performance, set against the illuminated dove tree, brought the crowd to their feet.
“One world, one family — that’s the heart of these Games,” said Hu Xiao. “And what better way to say that than through children singing together in harmony?”
A Venue Like No Other

In a bold and creative move, Chengdu chose to host the ceremony outdoors under the stunning Tianfu Roof — a 430-meter-long wooden structure, the largest of its kind in Asia. The roof itself became part of the show, lit with vivid LED displays showing sports, cultural symbols, and the World Games emblem. Nearby buildings also joined in, glowing with lights that celebrated each of the 34 sports.
“We were inspired by the openness of Paris 2024 and wanted to create something equally special and true to Chengdu,” said Hu. “This lakeside setting gave us the perfect stage.”
Let the Games Begin
With competitions now underway in 60 disciplines across 34 sports, Chengdu 2025 promises thrilling performances, inspiring moments, and a celebration of the power of sport to bring people together.
Gao Zhidan, President of the Chengdu Organizing Committee and Chinese Olympic Committee, shared his hopes for the event:
“We want these Games to be simple, safe, and splendid — and above all, full of joy. We believe in the power of sport to connect people, uplift cities, and make the world just a little closer.”
From the lakeside glow of Qinhuang to the roar of the crowd, The World Games 2025 is off to a joyful and unforgettable start — and the best is yet to come.

Muaythai is ready to shine.
