Building on the success of IFMA’s global cultural sporting and educational exchanges, IFMA, in collaboration with the African Muaythai Federation, proudly integrated the vibrant Songkran Festival into the Opening Ceremony of the African Muaythai Championships.

The preservation and promotion of Muaythai’s cultural traditions, such as the Wai Kru, mongkol, and Pi Muay band, remain a central pillar of IFMA events. This year, the traditional Rot Nam Dam Hua Ceremony, in which water is poured over elders’ hands to demonstrate respect, uphold tradition, and celebrate community values, was beautifully incorporated into the ceremony.

IFMA President, Dr. Sakchye Tapsuwan, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange, stating: “It is key for IFMA to take Thailand to the world and bring the world to Thailand. Songkran embodies respect and joy—values deeply rooted in Muaythai heritage. By incorporating Songkran activities into our exchanges, participants not only gain a rich cultural experience but also deepen mutual understanding.”

Driss El Hilali, President of the African Muaythai Union and Vice President of IFMA, highlighted the significance of preserving cultural identity: “Anchoring the cultural identity of Muaythai is essential. It embodies stories and values that connect us with generations past, reinforcing our shared identity. Regardless of where we come from, traditions ground us in our roots.”

Lennert Swart, Chair of the IFMA Athletes Commission and a proud South African, emphasized the importance of traditions, particularly in Africa: “Traditions matter. As Africans, we take pride in both our national identity and our cultural heritage. Incorporating traditions like Songkran further enriches our shared experiences.”

The African Muaythai Championships served as a powerful showcase of Africa’s rich cultural diversity and spirit, blending Songkran into the event to underline the transformative power of cultural exchange.

This commitment to cultural integration is what sets IFMA apart, fostering a deeper connection between people, traditions, and the global Muaythai community.
