In an incredible night’s fight, put on by Lion Fight Promotions, Canada’s Simon Marcus defeated the Russian “Lion,” Artem Levin in a hard hitting war that has paved the way for a serious re-match in October at the SportAccord World Combat Games.
This was a much anticipated match, both are winners of the IFMA World Championships, both are winners from the 2010 SportAccord World Combat Games, and both of them are WMC Continental Champions.
Held in Saint Petersburg, the World Combat Games will see Levin on the home soil of his native country, and it will be up to Marcus to hold his ground and prove his mettle again.
But for now, victory is complete for Simon Marcus. Flanked by the Canadian flag and a photograph in memory of the legendary Ajarn Sit Yod Tong, who passed away last month, Marcus punched the air with a victor’s smile.
Now these two have the chance to meet again in Levin’s territory, as they will be fighting in the same weight division, among the eight best light heavyweights in the world. They will be set in opposite qualifying groups, meaning they will both have to win twice, in order to meet one another again in the final. If that happens, it will set the stadium on fire.
Kevin Ross set his mark again, as one of the world’s best super welterweights, and could also be one of America’s hopes for the SportAccord World Combat Games.
The Lion Fight 9 event was broadcast on AXS TV, and featured five pro fights:
Simon Marcus def. Artem Levin via Unanimous Decision
Tiffany Van Soest (USA) def. Natalie Yip (CAN) by Unanimous Decision
Kevin Ross (USA) def. Bernie Mendieta (GB) by Split Decision
